It's a type of canvas and has a super no slip bottom. They are so light it is literally comparable to being barefoot. The padding in the shoe is better the any "air" shoe I have owned. There is one problem though, no half sizes. I usually wear a 10 1/2 and I read from other reviews that if you attempt to wear socks with them its too tight. I ordered a size 11 and they are just a bit to big when my socks are on, however, I still chose to wear these over any other shoe I have. I believe that a size 10 would have been too small with socks so keep that in mind when ordering, and thats something you should do right now. My last pair lasted for many years and it's nice to see that the new pair has even better construction and materials. The leather seems to have been upgraded with some extra stitching where the old ones failed eventually. Sizing is correct and the sole has the necessary anti-skid properties. If you plan on wearing these with athletic (thick) socks and you don't mind looking funny while wearing shorts, you may want to bump up by half a size. Don't forget to take a close look at the color - some of them have the classic white sole while others have a darker brown sole. Choose depending upon the look you want.
